Situation: A small farm house, Knob & Tube. Would like to put a light on a pole about 50' from the house and then jump to a "barn" 30' from the pole for a light & 1 receptacle (20 amp). I am planning on using #10 THHN overhead from the house to the pole and then to the barn. Question(s): Since there is no ground at the house, can I drive a 3/4 Rigid 8' at the barn for the ground? and Do I need to be concerned about Conductor Identification of the overhead lines. I am planning on using Black for all conductors outdoors.
Thanks in advanced

Re: Farm House

I have not worked in the trade full time for a few years so I am a little rusty. I am working back into the field again full time.

The original post on this topic was more of a confirmation of how I interpret the 2002 NEC.

The #10 I'm using is due to length of the span. per Article 225.6(A)(1)

The Grounding issue from 250.32 and Part III 250.50(A)(5)(a)

Thanks for your understanding and any help will be and is greatly appreciated

Re: Farm House

I have no doubt you have enough conductor size to satisfy the potential drop, but your choice of material for overhead conductors wouldn't fly. You need to look into using some type of tri-plex that is approved for outdoor, overhead installation such as you describe. Separate structures will require some means of grounding, in most cases a ground rod.

Phil:
I thought THWN rather than THHN would be approved. For the ground, I was going to drive a 3/4 Rigid 8' at the structure and ground from that point on. What am I missing?

Thanks
