I have been asked by a local farmer to wire his diesel pump motor, It is mounted at the top of the storage tank.he pulls the dispensing nossel out of its holder and the pump begins to run.Presently there is a 3 wire cord running up to the motor location. Is diesel pump wiring to be done with the same considerations as a gas pump motor? he bought the unit from a farm auction and it is older but appears to be in working order, but he doesn't want to spend more than he has to. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!:?

The electrical for diesel bulk storage should be very simple ( not a classified location ) "but" I would contact the Fire Marshals office to see what type of permits & inspections are necessary for this storage tank.

Most customers don't want to set those storage tanks up legally with containment and fence and anything else that may be required in your state.

While diesel does not generally create a classified (hazardous) location wiring is still required to be consistent with Sections 514.11 through 514.16 which are independent of area classification issues.
