Hey all,
I'm going to run a 2/0 Al feed from my house to detached garage. I'm using schedule 40 conduit buried 18" below grade. My septic pump tank (takes water from septic tank and pumps to remote septic field a long ways away) is 20" below grade and I'd need to run the electrical conduit over the pump tank. The lid is raised above grade and the electrical will not interfere with access to the tank interior. However, can I run the conduit over the tank or is there a rule against this? The only issue I could see is that if the pump tank needed to be replace, the electrical would need to be cut into.

As long as you are still over 18" deep shouldn't be a NEC concern.

If you are concerned about future access to the tank, can you route the line around the tank?

My thoughts were to call digger's hot line before any digging was to be done anyway.

Which you should do anyway - but most cases this tank would be privately owned and nobody will locate it because of a notification from diggers hotline.

Thanks. I did go head and re-route just to be safe. An extra 15' of digging but worth peace of mind just in case.

I did call the hotline but they don't mark waste lines and such (or they did not in my case).

What they don't mark is private lines. If you were connected to a municipal sewer system they might locate your sewer line though it might depend on where the point of transition of private line and municipal line officially occurs.

I may have been misunderstood. I was to understand that there was concern being shown to route the cable over the septic tank which I would think would only become an issue should the septic tank need to be serviced. Then it is common that there is an access opening which is buried and needs to be uncovered in order to service the tank. My concern would be that a cable run over that area would be an issue. As such, calling digger's hotline before doing any digging would be important.

All valid concerns, but who is the utility provider that will locate the tank because of a call from digger's hotline?

The tank will be a "privately owned utility" in most instances and will be up to the owner or excavator to locate it in such a situation.
