Oh God, these feeder tap requirements confused me to Kingdom come!!! 
By 230A, I mean 225A. 230A, 75 degree wire ampacity.Originally posted by iwire:

The real question is how far you can run before you hit the OCPD.
If the distance from the tap to this panel is less than 25' you can tap the 400 amp feed with 230 amp conductors and the panel OCPD will protect these conductors.
If the distance is not much farther than 25' (outside the allowable tap distance) it will be cheaper to run 400 amp rated conductors to the panel.
At some distance it will become cheaper to install a OCPD at the tap so you can run 230 amp conductors to the panel.
