I was wondering when bidding work ,if aluminum or copper is not specified on drawings for feeders ,do you use aluminum to keep the price down?In this case i have two sets of 500's about 300 ft long. The savings would be quite big.Just like to see how several people would handle this.

Re: feeders

When I have written specifications, I always specified copper. If whoever designed your project did not include that requirement, then I consider you to be free to use whatever will bring the project in at the lowest cost, consistent with all other project requirements. If the owner later decides he wants copper, then that will be an extra cost, at the time of installation.

Re: feeders

IMO alumminum is OK in sizes 1/0 and larger, if used with compression connectors, if underground, then XHHW-XLP

Re: feeders

Even if copper is not specified the engineer had to size the feeders based on something. If you make the choice to run aluminum you have to increase the wire size as aluminum doesn't have the same ampacity as copper. Are you going to take on that engineering responsibility?
