Feeding Track Lighting with SJ Cord

I have a project that has track lighting suspended on air craft cable. Can I feed the track with SJ cord and can I use 14 gauge SJ cord on a 20amp circuit? The track is single circuit and the GC is says that the store is considered a plenum space also which I totally disagree with. But that is what we are dealing with.

SJ is listed for pendant use and for wiring luminairs but is not listed as fixture wire. If your planning on hard wiring to the ceiling box, you'll have to use 12 awg SJ. If you put a receptacle at each track feed, you can use 14 awg. You'll also have to check the temperature rating on the jacket of the sj cable for overall temperature rating of the circuit if you hard wire.

I wired a bunch of hung track that was in the spec to be wired with white SJ cord. I wired it anyhow, and made sure I pointed it out to the inspector. I fully expected a red tag, which I hoped I'd get, so I could get paid to do it over. Regrettably, the inspector said, "I don't like it, but they're doing them like this all the time now.". I've got pictures I can dig up someplace of the job.

The only issue I see would be the use of 14 AWG with a 20 amp circuit.

The store is not a plenum space to the NEC, the GC is nuts.

It could be.... But the lights themselves would not be allowed there either.... Or a cash register - or whatever it is they sell.
