I am going to be installing a conduit for a future fiber optic cable. They are calling for and 18" separation of the conduit from my power conduits in the trench. At one point the conduits will need to cross. Is it a problem to cross one over the other for a distance of about 4'?

can the pipe pass over 18" above the power pipes and still meet code?

I don't know of a code article that says there needs to be 18" spacing (or any spacing) for a fiber optic conduit from a power conduit. Electrically speaking, the Fiber Optic signal is not susceptible to EMI from the power cable. Running it along seems A OK to me. Seperation seems to be a design requirement not a Code or an electrical operation requirement.

The "OP" is looking for a way to maintane the 18" spacing .So my question is the trench deep enough so he can run his over the power pipes and still be deep enough to meet the code on underground pipe runs;)

If limited on space and did not have to dig to china that is what we would do in some situations, did down put the power at the deepest cover and then put in whatever else. Not sure what conduit your running but if you run something that does not need to be buried as deep compared to what the power is in that might get you where you need to be?

Umm, no he is not- I would think he could figure that out.

Answer is there is no problem. Matter of fact there is no reason for the 18" spacing to begin with.

Exactly. We run fiber in cable tray an inch away from 35 kV and 5 kV cables frequently - there is no separation distance required for any practical purpose.

It is the customer that is calling for the 18" spacing:cool:
