Fiber/plastic bushings

I once put fiber bushings on all my connecters for SER cable on services.
A few years ago I had an inspector tell me it was not necessary and seem to remember reading that if it was a cable with an outer covering that protruded past the connector a certain distance, the connector did not require a bushing. I cannot find that reference. 300.4 B2F is not the section I am thinking of. Any thoughts? Was I dreaming it?

300.4(G):
(G) Insulated Fittings. Where raceways contain 4 AWG or larger insulated circuit conductors and these conductors enter a cabinet, box, enclosure, or raceway, the conductors shall be protected by a substantial fitting providing a smoothly rounded insulating surface, unless the conductors are separated from the fitting or raceway by substantial insulating material that is securely fastened in place.

It does not mention cables.
