Is there any IEEE, manufacturer, or code standard that specifies the maximum temperature THHN/THWN-2 is permitted to reach during or after a short circuit?
The short time maximum permitted conductor temperature for insulated conductors is 150° per the Insulated Cable Engineers Association.
So, what about the 200°C LL5 fire alarm cable sometimes spec'd in NYC?The short time maximum permitted conductor temperature for insulated conductors is 150° per the Insulated Cable Engineers Association.
In my opinion ICEA P-32-382/1999 standard presents for thermoplastic insulation the
short-circuit maximum temperature of 150oC.[UL 83 states as nylon [polyamide] it is also a thermoplastic material]
IEC 60502-1/2004 in Table 3 - Maximum conductor temperatures for different types of insulating compound. For Polyvinyl Chloride [PVC]:
Conductor cross-section ≤300 mm2 160 oC ;Conductor cross-section >300 mm2 140oC.
No reference to polyamide.
