Adding a Grounding Rod to the Pool Pump

Materials:

1/2" copper rod (8' long)
tree stake driver
sledgehammer

1. Find an area to place the rod where it won't come into contact with underground plumbing or utility company wiring.

2. Use a tree stake driver to drive the rod into the ground (figure F). When you?ve gone as far as you can go with the driver, use a sledgehammer to drive the rod into the ground until only a small section is left exposed (figure G).

3. With the rod in place, attach the bond wire to the grounding electrode (figure H). Now, if any current leaks from the motor, it will go straight into the earth.

I found the last sentence to me very informative....

Truly. I wonder where they come up with their install stuff. I remember on This Old House they used to have a disclaimer to check with your local jurisdiction to determine their requirements. I wonder if these new shows have a disclaimer.

Leaky current can be such a nuisance! It's best to route those pesky leaks into the earth!

this scene looks eerily familiar. the last time i remember seeing this, it ended with the rod going through my hand. the guy in the background would've been my brother who happened to remember every episode of ER in an instant and bandaged my wound.

pics are a little blurry. but i'm proud of the way the hole slimmed down from its original 5/8" diameter.

What was worse, driving the ground rod through your hand or pulling your hand off the ground rod?

neither. it was watching the blood vessel it hit spurt about 5 gallons every time my heart beat. i had to turn my head or i would've fainted.

I ran a skill saw over my thumb, that was not to pretty either... ;)

I see a new thread coming on " What stupid thing have you done to your body while at work ? "
A frammer on the job a few weeks ago shot a nail gun into his chest/lung. That got OSHA on the job.

framer's area different breed, most closely matched in skill and wit to a painter. i saw two framers get in a fight on a jobsite and got carried to the hospital with a claw-hammer in his face. i saw another have his lunchtime special cigarette and within 20 minutes of that he fell off the roof, broke both his legs, both his ankles and an arm. not surprisingly, he was denied workers comp.

And they wonder why I don't want them "fixing" any of my wiring they may have damaged.

Anyone else see this episode?
Yeah, I have, twice. P.J. (my better third) and I give each other that look every time we see electrical work done on TV.

I don't think I've ever seen a TV wiring job done right, except on Holmes on Homes. Now there's a builder I'd like to wire for.
