Finding answers in the NEC

For ready and quick NEC references for finding answers in the NEC while in the field, is there a PDF or word version of the NEC available that will fit onto a PDA?

Although, I have my own methods I will appreciate hearing from others.

At one time I thought that the Franklin Company was developing something alone these lines.

The 2002 version was available as a PDF, but for some reason I heard they changed the electronic version of the 2005 to something that is almost unusable.

Joe,

I have purchased the last three NEC Handbooks on CDROM. Included with each, on the CD, is a copy of the NEC, as printed, in pdf format. One finds the file by using a file explorer and looking through the directory on the CD.

I keep the '99, '02 and '05 on my PDA (the one I had with me yesterday morning :) ).

Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.0 for Pocket PC has an import utility to "reflow" the document to fit a PDA's screen resolution. The import can take a long time (over an hour for the 2008 ROP).

But, even with the slow import, if the PDA has a newer, faster CPU, the ability to carry multiple copies of the Code in a shirt pocket is handy.

NEC PDF versions

Hi Al:

I appreciate the information about the 2.0 reader and will load it onto my Palm TX for those files, unless you want to send them to me?

As far as the PDF versions you and Don describe, I was aware of them but the new versions are read and search only.

My personal downloaded NFPA purchased copy of the 05 version has my name and company printed on each page and is not easy to use.

I think that we can still find a CD that comes with the earlier versions of the Mullen residential book and it has the NEC readily available for use.

I enjoyed meeting you too.

Don

I was told they used some protection scheme that made them all but unusable. Have they changed that? Or was I misinformed.

Among other things I had heard you cannot copy and paste.

I copy and paste text and graphics from mine, to further our discussions here, a lot. I've never had a problem.

There was a lot of installation issues with the NEC CDROM (non-handbook), as the copy protection scheme used would not permit the full installation of the electronic 2005 NEC to a harddisk, alone. The CD had to be present in the drive to run from the harddisk. Using a software CD player (a kludge hack) provided individuals a work around.

The NEC Handbook, on CDROM, came out enough later, that the installation copy protection was more relaxed, although it was necessary to "register" the installation lest it lock out.
