In looking over an install in the factory that I work. The contractors ran 4/0 DLO finely stranded essentially RHW2. They connected to a circuit breaker by using the hex head screws to smash/connect the wire. I was trying to look at the cut sheet and did not see anything prohibiting it but it just seems wrong help!

You should also be able to find adapters or sleeves.
As a general rule I don’t believe this type of lug is meant for stranded. Cannot take cover to get kit number

Not meant for fine stranded. Pretty much everything larger than 8 AWG is typically going to be stranded. Some grounding/bonding conductors being the exception.

Many mechanical lugs these days are listed for use with fine stranded wire.

Imo, wrapping the fine strands in heavy copper foil is a perfectly safe solution but I don't know that it is accepted by UL.

Camlok connectors with set screws seem to generally come with copper foil.

Wow! That’s new to me
I installed 1/0 fine stranded wire on 200 amp rated single wire plug in plugs for the six portable 100 KW portable 480 volt loads banks that were supplied with maybe 3/4 to 1" wide copper strips that were wrapped around the fine strands. During yearly generator PM'S we ran Diesel generators with load banks for 3 to 4 hours. Would have to use a FLIR camera on connections every hour and they were never more then maybe 2 to 3 degrees above room temperature.

Lugs rated for fine stranded conductors usually have a plate that presses against the conductor. Think the main thing is not to have the screw binding on the fine strands and potentially damaging them, so not knowing what listing standards actually are a sleeve or even copper foil very well might be acceptable for same reasons.

There is or was one lug manufacturer that had that in their instructions. Absence a manufacturer's instruction saying you can use the copper foil and finely stranded conductors with a lug listed for Class B and C stranding, I would see that as a violation.

Here are some 4/0 Ferrules, and the crimper isn't bad around $100
