Well I live in North TX and just had the local Telephone Company install FIOS in my house and bought the full package of services (TV, Phone, & Internet).

I must say I am more than impressed. From cost point of view it is about 40% less than what I was paying before between CATV (TV and Internet), and the TELCO.

From performance there is no comparison. Internet speed smokes @ 15 mb/s download and 2mb/s up load (6 x faster than CATV modem), unlimited telephone LD, and the television portion is outrageous. It is a lot different than CATV, and again similar. I get all the local stuff and everything you would find on your regular CATV, but the bonus is Video On Demand. You can literally replay anything that has ever been aired, recorded, or released by Hollywierd. The big plus is you don?t have to pay for channels you don?t use like government access, religion, shopping, etc. Yes there is lots of HDTV, and every channel is digital.

Ok, enough gloating. When and if you live long enough to have fiber to the house, check it out. It is less expensive than having two providers or a bundled package from CATV, not to mention so much richer and diversified content. Once the TELCO gets fiber to the house, game over for CATV or any copper services.

rub it in, just rub it in. i live three miles out of the city limits in a south georgia town and cable stops 4 houses down. dsl stops 3 houses before me, and it doesn't even cover the entire town. i just happen to live near the high school which is the only area that gets it. we have a wireless system (camvera) with about a 5 mile radius. i pay for 768kbps which is the highest service you can get. my average speed test clocks in around 500kbps. i've heard they'll soon be updating our telegraph lines. isn't life great?
