I know that strictly speaking, NFPA 72 is not within the scope of this forum. But I also know that all of you deal with it as well so if I may...

I've got a Private Mode, Psych ward with smoke detectors in the patient rooms with LED indicators outside of the rooms, do I need a fire alarm annunciator at the nurses station?

and if so, where is the requirement?

Thanks,

Mike

In a hospital in patient areas, hospitals generally utilize 'Private Mode' signaling, whereby the staff is notified of an emergency and are responsible for initiating the appropriate evacuation plan. 'Public Mode' signaling is used in public and common areas, where occupants are expected to evacuate without assistance.

As for the other comment "depends on the job specs". I'm in the process of generating the job specs! I know that an annunciator at the nurses station is the norm. I'm looking for the code requirement and whether or not there is one.

thanks,

Mike

I have installed and service FACP for several years and in a hospital
of ward center they all have your typical control panels in a FACP Control
Room. As far as installing a Annunciator, Usually we end up putting it
if the building has more than just the 1st fl.. Also, you must consider if
the FACP is monitored 24hrs by a security or Authorized Personnel in that
building. If not than you must install a annunciator via the FACP nearest
to the nurses station area.

Just received your last quote About code.
No, you don't need a annuciator @ the nurse station if the FACP
is monitored by a Authorized personnel on site 24hrs.

Mike,
As you might know, I primary design data centers, but I fiddle in the code quite a bit, so take the following for what is worth. I've never designed a private mode notifications system.
NFPA 72
7.9.3.1 Private Mode.
Unless otherwise permitted by the authority
having jurisdiction, all textual visible notification appliances
in the private mode shall be located in rooms that are
accessible only to those persons directly concerned with the
implementation and direction of emergency action initiation

and procedure in the areas protected by the system.

I think patient room smoke detector can signal back to either fire alarm annunciator panel or nurse call master station. Check with lastest building code edition - especially fire protection section, I think we do not need smoke detector in patient room any more.
