Sections 725, 760, 310 of the California Electric Code refer to cable marking requirements. I have been asked several times by electricians, general contractors and fellow fire alarm installing contractors weather or not fire alarm cabling that is installed free air (not in conduit) can be painted. Too often, general contractors want the fire alarm cabling to be complete in time for the entire open ceiling to be painted, however as required by Section 310.11 of the CEC, fire alarm cable is to include specific identification at prescribed intervals.
I have not been able to get a definitive answer from AHJ's if the fire alarm installation would be rejected at the time of final acceptance inspection should they discover fire alarm wire that cannot be easily identified as a specific type of fire alarm circuit. Additionally, fire alarm cable manufacturers that I have consulted have confirmed they do not recommend painting fire alarm wiring, stating that the marking of such wiring is to be clearly visible.
Further, one could question the flame spread properties of the cable once covered by one of many types of paint.
Is it the intent of the Electric Code?s marking requirements to prohibit fire alarm wiring to be painted?
