Is type FPLP-CMP (plenum rated) fire alarm cable required to be installed in conduit? The wire is run above the suspended ceiling in a single story office building.

The fire prevention officer insists that it is not allowed since the cable may be exposed to damage. It is my understanding that the cable is not exposed to damage since it is installed above 7.5 feet.

Re: Fire Alarm Cable

To answer the first part of your question; No. Conduit is not required for this type of cable.

To answer the second part; If the AHJ judges the cable could be subject to damage in this particular aplication, he is justified.

(bold added by me)

2002 NEC 760.52 (B) (1)..........Where installed exposed, cables shall be adequately supported and installed in such a way that maximum protection against physical damage is afforded by building construction such as baseboards, door frames, ledges, and so forth............

Re: Fire Alarm Cable

Being from MA myself I can say I have installed miles of this cable in buildings with no raceway needed.

You are in a tough position as Websparky pointed out If the AHJ judges the cable could be subject to damage in this particular application you may be stuck with that even though that is a unusual requirement in this State.

As this wiring is supervised I do not understand the need for EMT protection above the ceiling.

If it gets compromised it will show at the panel.

Re: Fire Alarm Cable

Thank you for your reply. I have seen this cable installed in similar situations and have never had any problems in the past. The electrical inpector does not consider the installation subject to damage.
