There is a book called Fire Alarm Signalling Systems Handbook. Look it up on Google. I found one free PDF download for the 2003 edition, I think there is a 2010 edition. It esplains the fundamentals of operation and design of fire alarm systems. There is no one answer for most areas. It depends on many factors including the intent of the system.

Take a simple approach: what are the expected ambient conditions at the ceiling when the generator is running? Is it outside the 32-100F required for smokes by 72? Then a spot smoke would be out of the question. Now find a device rated for the expected conditions (probably a 194 heat).

Multicriteria is an option, but, is smoke detection actually required? Just a thought.
