Fire alarm question--residence in office building

I have a project in which there are living quarters on a floor of a building that otherwise has administrative functions. I currently show low voltage fire alarms in each of the dorm-like rooms. Does these detectors need to be monitored by the base building fire alarm system? My preliminary code study doesn't seem to indicate that they HAVE to be, but I was wondering what your thoughts are.

IMO the entire building would be of the same system. I would want all areas to be alerted if there was a problem.

At the college dorms in this area the room detectors (smoke) are local alarm only. There is a heat detector in the entrance area of the room which is tied into the system alarm, smoke detectors and pull stations w/in the common areas.:smile:

check local codes also. MA has its own set of codes for this situation.

In TN we use smoke detectors in the dorm rooms which sound in the individual room and also at the main panel.
