Can fire alarm cable be run exposed or concealed (not in conduit) in non-sanctuary areas of a church?

Does anyone thing smoke detectors need to be located under a church sanctuary balcony? The balcony is 13 feet deep and has a flat ceiling below (so smoke will not be trapped against the back wall). There are smoke detectors above.

Generally they can be exposed or concealed as long as they are not exposed to physical damage. Some AHJ' consider <10' exposed requires protection.

On high ceilings, sometimes you need to locate detectors at intermediate levels (under a balcony) to catch smoke conditions during a smoke stratification condition.
