Today i did a job at a house where we installed a couple of ceiling fans and the question that I have is , " can we take the power from the fire alarm / smoke detector circuit and use it to power up the fans, or is this illegal ? ". I have read 760.55 in the N.E.C. aswell as 725.2 & 725.55(A)(D)(1) (2). I'm having trouble understanding the termonology of what is being said and understanding the differences between classes. Any info. on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fire Alarm = residential

You need to stay out of Article 760,unless you have a fire alram system with a fire control panel. If you just have some 14-3 NM cable tying a bunch of sinlge station smoke alarms together, you have a branch circuit (ARticle 210) not a fire alarm system.

You also need to be out of Article 725, assuming, once again, that you have single station smoke alarms on a branch circuit.

The ultimate answer to your question would be yes, you can have them on the same circuit, unless you have a local code that says otherwise.

Re: Fire Alarm = residential
