I do not have a copy of NFPA 72 in front of me and I need some help.

Air handlers that push air over __________ tons , or_____________CFM require FA shut down ?

Thanks ,

Ron,

Thanks , I'll look into that. Just off hand are you familiar with what I'm talking about.

The reason why I'm asking this is , I am trying to get a change order for my company. We are the electrical contractor , and are installing the fire alarm raceways. The drawings do not show this , but I'm almost positive that the requirement exists for FA shut down on units of 2000cfm or larger and need some reference power.

thanks,

It's absolutely there.
If you tell me which mech code, I can paste the text for you here.
Depending on the fire alarm system, it may be just an addressable device on the nearest loop to be added within 3' of the motor starter.

Ron,

Lets go with both, NFPA 90 and the International Mechanical Code. I'm curious now to see if they are different.

Thanks,

I'm going to guess !/2 ton and 2000 CFM

From the IMC:

606.2.1 Return air systems. Smoke detectors shall be in -
stalled in return air systems with a design capacity greater
than 2,000 cfm (0.9 m3/s), in the return air duct or plenum
upstream of any filters, exhaust air connections, outdoor air
connections, or decontamination equipment and appliances.

606.4 Controls operation. Upon activation, the smoke detec -
tors shall shut down the air distribution system. Airdistribution
systems that are part of a smoke control system shall switch to
the smoke control mode upon activation of a detector.

The IMC is opposite the requirements contained in NFPA 90A. NFPA 90A requires supply side smoke detection for HVAC systems over 2000 CFM and return side over 15000 CFM.
Section5.14.3.1 of NFPA 72 references NFPA 90A
