Fire alarm systems in plazas and other multiple occupancy buildings?

Strip plazas or buildings with commercial on ground floor and dwelling units above:
Does an alarm in one occupancy need to sound alarms in the entire building?
Assume 1 hour rated walls between occupancies.
Is this situation spelled out in the IBC or NFPA 72?

IBC or local ordinance. And it may depend on the type of dwelling unit; apartment, motel, boarding house, etc.
