I'm reposting this here (from the Low Voltage section) because this section gets the most traffic:

We're installing fire alarm cables in a very old college dorm building. When the cables are run in a drop ceiling or other semi open area (i.e. not through framing members) is there a max distance between supports? I can't find that in the NEC. Is it in a fire alarm code?

Re: fire alarm wiring

In lieu of definite dimensions I would resort to securing the cables in a neat workmanlike manner. This should work.

Re: fire alarm wiring

I have never found a support requirement other than neat and good workmanship. I have on occasion specified (not code required) to follow the support requirements of NM Cable as opposed to nothing.

If you don't find the answers you want here go to the AFAA website and register with their code forum. Post your question there. You'll get about 25 responses.
