short answer no, long answer yes. It depends on the dwelling unit, whether it is to be a R-3 or some version of transitional housing, residential care facility, etc. My recommendation would be to call the Fire AHJ.

Edit to add: I believe the Building Code covers this, and possibly NFPA 72, but I might be wrong on that. The Fire Code has a mention of it as well.
