I would just like to know where in the code book can I find the distance a smoke detector has to be away from duct work as far as A.C. vents and or return air vents etc.

Without a copy of the NFPA 72, I would venture that this is the document you are seeking.

I thought that this information is in the directions of most smoke detectors.
As mentioned earlier, smoke and carbon monoxide info is usually in the building code.

NFPA 72 used to require 3', but not anymore

That depends on the application.

In a residence, 2007 NFPA 72 11.8.3.5(6) prohibits mounting a smoke alarm or smoke detector within 36 inches of a heat register.

2007 NFPA 72 5.7.1.7 states that detectors be placed "to prevent nusiance alarms" , this does not give a specifoc distance, but allows you to use your good judgement.

I'd say the NEC article would be 110.3(b) ~ basically...what the manuafc.s instructions say. I would imagine it(the instructions) would coincide with NFPA 72 and all other applicable codes.

NFPA 72 A.5.4.7.1 "Detectors should not be located in a direct airflow or closer than 3' from an air supply diffuser or return air opening"

Keep in mind this is from the Annex, which is NFPA 72's version of "Fine Print Notes". It's not a rule, but a recommended practice.
