Do control/status modules always need power as well as fa cable. The whole module thing confuses me. Is there a good book on fa systems that's fairly easy reading?

If your system is addressable, control/relay modules need only the SLC to operate. It is simply providing a dry contact, configuration is dependent on the system used.

Status/monitor module is also connected via the SLC and monitors a (dry) alarm contact.
 
From what I've seen, mostly simplex and edwards, simplex systems still use 24v to open and close dry contacts on an external relay, m101 or m201's are the standards around here. The edwards has a module SIGA CR that has a set of contacts rated up to .5 A @ 120 volts that is just part of the data loop, anything greater than that you have to use an external relay.
 
As has already been stated, addressable modules receive they're power to operate from the SLC (Signaling Line Circuit). However most manufacturers define a "Control" module as an addressable device that is used to operate horns, strobe, activate suppression systems, etc.

If my "Control" module, you're talking about a module that's connected to one of those mentioned above, then yes, it need a separate 24 vdc.

With System Sensor components, used and private labled by most manufacturers, you can download their installation instructions from the System Sensor web site.

I use control modules to trigger a power switch.
Such as controlling horn strobes, etc.
You can also use it a a dry contact however a relay module is designed for that and does not cost as much. You need to read up on addressable fire alarm systems also known as Multiplex.

not much to know about SLC loops other than the have voltage and feed a data stream to addressable devices.
