need code reference for a smoke detector mounted on drop ceiling where it states it must be mounted to in box

I don't think there is a code that states they need a box,but I feel it's a good practice.

We have a local Engineer that specifies that they along with speaker tubs be mounted on a 2' X 2' flat white powdercoated aluminum plate. A local fab shop will make them up for roughly $5.00 apiece. I use them on all of my jobs if the architect approves, which most of them do.

If you are talking about 120 volt residential types yes they need a box. But a central fire alarm system I would say no. Power is out at my office so I cannot access the code on my network today.

760.130(B) PLFA Wiring Methods and Materials. Power-limited
fire alarm conductors and cables described in 760.179 shall
be installed as detailed in 760.130(B)(1), (B)(2), or (B)(3)
of this section and 300.7. Devices shall be installed in accordance
with 110.3(B), 300.11(A), and 300.15.

I believe this should cover it as well as when doing fire alarm plan review I always look at the cut sheets on each device and nearly 99.9% of the time it specifically states in the installation instructions to use a back box. Also the IBC 907.1.1 I believe calls for the cut sheets on all submissions so we cover them their as well.
