Our insurance company is requiring us to fire stop around cable trays where they penetrate walls. Most places look like it was never done in any manner and others look like it may have fallen away if ever there. We are closing gaps with drywall, fireproof rock wool and red caulk,. Tedious job, as many places are high up and blocked by pipes, ducts and anything else you could imagine.

I think a good practice when installing trays would be to install a bottom and top metal cover on trays, extending about 12 inches each side of the wall, then the drywallers could finish tightly around them. Rock wool could be stuffed in the ends to fill gaps. Of course, that is impossible now and we have to do the best we can.

Has anyone else dealt with this? .

At the very large hospital/research center that I retired from they always used the approved what looked like red bricks & bags to seal all power & communications trays. This made it easier to install additional cables . For some reason the strict safety department insisted that we used only products from one vendor probably in the event of a problem.

Had when Fire/Codes enforcement came to inspect a new installation in an existing building, he insisted that fire stop be added to penetrations even in area that was not added to. Seems that original was not compliant and our work initiated a review.

We use to use THESE Other manufactures have versions as well.

If we could we would sub it out to a Fire Proofing Contractor.
