Hi,

First year apprentice. I’m working with fire dampers and wiring them but I’m not too sure what wires does what. I understand to some extent that there are wire that sends and receive a signal from the panel and activate the damper. How is this process actually completed? Could someone help me understand the process a little better?

Thank you

Usually fire dampers are “fail closed” so they should have power until activated.
Yes, power to open and spring return. Sometimes, power to operate in both directions. Why, you ask? Because depending on the design, the sudden closure of a fire damper, or multiple fire dampers in the case of a building-wide blackout, risks turning all of your rectangular HVAC ducts into round HVAC ducts, since the air handlers have inertia and won't stop on a dime.

In addition to power to the dampers, you may also have limit switch wiring to signal damper open/closed to the fire alarm control unit or the smoke control unit, depending.
