I have a friend that is building a hotel, and the EC and builder are trying to charge him $10,000.00 to install Fire Domes. Because the building inspector wants to see a one hour finish for can?s in ceiling. Which makes perfect sense being that the walls are fire rated and that it is a type III con all wood and 4 story?s tall? And yes the EC VE the fixtures and put subject to approval on the contract. But I think it?s the EC?s responsibility.

This to me is stuff that we as EC?s have to deal with on every job and should know what to install where.

What do you all think about this?

i learned awhile back that you only bid to spec, even if you catch a potential problem in the plans, because that's what all your competitors are doing.

anything beyond that is a change-order.

your friend is responsible for having the recessed light fire boxes installed.

he should've hired a better architect.

I understand everything that you guys are saying.
Wouldn?t this be similar to wall? Being that they?re required to be fiber boxes because of the fire rating on them. As opposed to a 4??sq box which would require putty pad and cost more. Same Arch notes that show fire rating on wall show rating on ceiling. And on the spec it shows 4??sq boxes used. EC used fiber N/O box because of cost and ease. So no one thinks that the EC should be at fault.

I'll bid to specs too, but offer value engineering if I spot something aggregeous.

that's something i'll do as well.

and i'm sure you do the same as i, and submit a price for work exactly to spec, and anything else you see that may be required should be separate.

IMO, its impossible to say who is responsible without seeing all the specs and drawings.

I usually include a note on our drawings that say all work is to be per the NEC. But then we try to be fair if we think something was reasonably missed, or if something was just unforeseable. If anything like that was included, I would say it could be debated who is responsible.
