Fire Pump Direct connection

The NEC requires a direct connection to to the listed fire pump device from either a tap ahead of a service disconnect of separate service entrance however article 695.4(B) seems to give the impression that you can add a superviced disconnect device with over-current device between the source and the listed fire pump device.

Does 695.4(B) apply only in a feeder source situation per 695.3(B)(3)? It is a little confusing the way 695.4(B) is worded. I think the only situation where a disconnect and over current is allowed between a listed fire pump device and the source is in a situation that fall under a campus environment per Art 695.4(B). Is this correct? I see many violations of this rule if I am correct?

Welcome to the Forum!

I can only think that yes there are fire pumps wired (grand fathered) and exist this way within many AHJ’s.

But if they need to change something that’s when the code kicks in. One has to meet all parts of the Code Article. All the various parts (using the correct parts…)

What are you seeing that not up to muster?

I don’t agree that you can limit the fire circuit to only the campus situation as your thinking.
In your situation. If it’s under Article 695.4(B) Supervised Connection - attached as it should be as per Article 695, your good.

I don't know if it is still allowable, but in older editions of the code, a disconnect was allowed provided the overcurrent protection was higher than locked rotor current, the wire size though does not have to be sized for locked rotor. Also when tapped ahead of the main, it was allowable to tap in the pull section that did not contain the main, but not if the main was in the same enclosure.

I believe that the disconnecting means and overcurrent device as part of the "supervised connection" (695.4(B)) would be allowed for an individual source, a multiple source with generator/service or a multiple feeder sources.

The text in 695.4(B) which says "for systems installed under the provisions of 695.3(B)(2) only..." seems to indicate that additional disconnecting means/OCPD is allowed at the source of the "feeders" as required to comply with other provisions of the code.
