Out of a switchboard, where you are tapping ahead of the main, Do I have to provide overcurrent protection for the feeder to the fire pump if it is over 10'? I know they don't want it to trip in case of an emergency. Do I have to provide a circuit breaker or fuse that is 6 times the rating of the motor in the switchboard?
It is my understanding that an overcurrent device is not required for a fire pump.

Re: Fire pump over current protection

I think you are in trouble if you are using Article 700 for the fire pump. 700.9(B) prohibits you from tapping ahead of the main in the switchboard.

Additionally, take a look at 695.3(A)(1). "A fire pump shall be permitted to be supplied by a separate service, or by a tap located ahead of and not within the same cabinet, enclosure, or vertical switchboard section as the service disconnecting means. The connection shall be located . . ."

If neither of these are a problem, see 695.4 for sizing the short-circuit protection only. General overcurrent protection is not provided except through the fire pump controller. ;)

No you would not have to supply ocpd at the tap for a fire pump at the service tap. you would have to have a disconecting means at the tap location. the size of the conductors and the ocpd have to be 125% of the listed controller load. article 695 is where you find all this information.
