fire pump service disconnent

hi. only two to six disconnects are permitted for one service. is fire pump's service disconnect is included within that limit, or it can be seventh, not counted as service disconnect? code reference would be helpfull.
thank you, igor.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

I see no exception that would permit a seventh disconnect on a single service to feed a fire pump.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

A fire pump does not require a service disconnet but if one is installed it must carry locked rotor current of the fire pump.
What size is the disconnect (amperes) and what is the voltage/hp of the fire pump?
There are exceptions to the six disconnect rule but as Don stated not for fire pumps.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

Igor, see 230.2(A)(1), 230.72(A)ex, and 230.72(B).

You are permitted to have a seperate service for a fire pump, or are permitted to locate it ("it" being the sixth and final handle, for the fire pump) remotely from the other 5 handles. But you're not permitted to exceed six handles on any one service. (230.71(A)). :)

Re: fire pump service disconnent

could you comment on section 225.34 a and 225.34 b.

does "remote from two to six" mean not only swith location but that that remote switch been the seventh?

igor.

(B) Additional Disconnecting Means. The one or more additional disconnecting means for """fire pumps""" or for emergency, legally required standby or optional standby system permitted by 225.30 shall be installed sufficiently """"remote from the one to six disconnecting means""" for normal supply to minimize the possibility of simultaneous interruption of supply.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

take a look at this. quoted is the comment in 2002 handbook. igor.

230.72 Grouping of Disconnects.
(A) General. The two to six disconnects as permitted in 230.71 shall be grouped. Each disconnect shall be marked to indicate the load served.
Exception: One of the two to six service disconnecting means permitted in 230.71, where used only for a water pump also intended to provide fire protection, shall be permitted to be located remote from the other disconnecting means.

"""The water pump in 230.72(A), Exception, is not the fire pump covered by Article 695."""

read in the quotes. igor.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

If you have a fire pump you have to have a separate service to it. Article 695 does not allow the fire pump feed to go throught the switch gear or disconnects used for other purposes. You basically have to come straight off the poco transformer secondary.

Since it is a separate service, it does not count toward the 6 disconnect requirement for the main service.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

J,
If you have a fire pump you have to have a separate service to it. Article 695 does not allow the fire pump feed to go throught the switch gear or disconnects used for other purposes.
It can be tapped at the load end of the service drop or lateral. That would still be part of the same service and the disconnect would be one of the six permitted.
695.3(A)(1) Electric Utility Service Connection A fire pump shall be permitted to be supplied by a separate service, or from a connection located ahead of and not within the same cabinet, enclosure, or vertical switchboard section as the service disconnecting means.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

Don,
I stand corrected. I never do it that way so I was not thinking was an option. It is dangerous to get too use to doing things one way. After a while you forget why you did it that way in the first place and start to think that is the way you have to do it.

Re: fire pump service disconnent

hi. we have one code and many interpretations.

i see it this way:

section '695.3 a 1' says that a tap ahead the service is allowed and no need for seperate service.

section '230.82 4' says that a fire pump tapped ahead the service must have a separate disconnecting means and overcurrent protection.
no physical switch location and fuse and feeder size consideration at this point.

section '230.72 a' says that the water pump that two to six disconnecting means rule applies to, is not the fire pump covered in article 695.

thus, the fire pump can be tapped to the same, one service. it must have disconnecting means and current protection. and for this disconnecting means, i.e. switch, the two to six switches rule does not apply.

this is how i see it. i need your comments.
