i have been told by the engineer on a job that i can use MI cable inside the building supplying a fire pump control panel . the conductors will originate on the line side of the main service disconnect at the utility pad mount transformer secondary .i had planed on running the conductors under ground 300 feet to the fire pump control room . the engineer insist that i use MI cable and run the cable through the building. is this accptable.thanks andy

Re: fire pump supply conductors

MI cable can be fire rated since its insulation can withstand very high heat. So it can be used to supply fire pumps by meeting the 1 hour fire tating per 695.6. But I don't think MI is cheap. I would think underground would give the same protection, and be more cost effective.

Also I would consider the size of the MI Cable. Large size cables, say #1/0 or #2/0 are very hard to install since the center conductor is solid. Factor in the 300' of support that you'll need than maybe laying conduit under the building would be an easier installation option.
