Im looking at a generator replacement and the current setup has the generator feeding an emergency panel through a transfer switch and the fire pump controller through a manual transfer switch located in the same room as the main switchboard which supplies the normal power to the pump.

Im reading through article 695 and just wanted to clarify the correct installation. Im interpreting the following:

A) a manual transfer switch cannot be installed in the fire pump circuit
B) The allowable disconnecting means cannot be located in the same room as the normal distribution switchboard

C) the routing of the conductors from the generator to the fire pump controller cannot be located near the normal distribution board

Any input would be appreciated

Thanks

The fire pump transfer switch is required to be be in the same room as the fire pump controller(NFPA 20 9.6.4), and the genset needs to be large enough to provide locked rotor current and other loads, if not the other loads must be automatically shed (normally a shunt trip breaker) to provide full current to the fire pump. If the other load is emergency lighting and the genset is not large enough for locked rotor current another genset may be required. Also if the genset is used as a optional standby system, It's classification changes to an emergency power system if a fire pump is connected.
