Wiring fire pumps. I have a 100 Amp Fire Pump. 240 Volt. I know we use to have a disconnect rated 600 %. What is the code now? Do we come from transformer unmeteredstraight to motor without disconnect or is disconect required before pump control panel. Help?

Re: Fire Pump

Tkirk, start with article 695.

Re: Fire Pump

check with local utility for metering requirements. I just finished a fire pump install that had to be metered. Also used disconnect and step up transformer (fire pump controller was ordered 480 volt, I only had 208 available)

Re: Fire Pump

Your not as concerned with overcurrent protection as you are with "short circuit protection" for a fire pump.

Re: Fire Pump

The general concepts of fire pump services are:
 • the fire pump should run to failure
 • the overcurrent protection is to be sized to allow the motor to run to failure
 • the motor circuit is to be sized as any other motor circuit (125% of the largest motor plus 100% of the remaining motors - like the jockey pump motor)
 • the switch is required to be 115% of the running amperes but will need to be sized large enough to handle the overcurrent protective device
 • if the controller is SUSE rated, a disconnecting means and overcurrent protection is not normally required
 • the fire pump controller will disconnect the motor from power after 20 seconds of locked rotor amperes (this is why the motor circuit conductors, disconnect, and metering is not required to be sized for locked rotor)
Because of the need, under conditions of a fire, the fire pump installation should be located as far away from the general service as possible. Additionally, Article 695 needs to be followed to the letter . . . don't even think about bending the rules. :D
