Fire Rated Back Board per California Code

Here is the question I received today:

I was trying to find the California code that requires the use of a fire rated back board when mounting equipment to the wall. Specifically we are mounting a power supply to the various walls (some fire rated, some not) and I believe that we needed to add a back board to the wall before we mounted the power supply. Can you ask around to see if this is a code requirement?

Anyone know of a code this is referencing?

I can't speak for Cali but if you surface mount something on a rated wall and don't compromise the integrity of the wall rating, you're fine.
