Hey guys I looked at a job in an apartment building where they removed a wall in the kitchen ,my question was after looking in the cieling i could see the concrete slab from the floor above ,her actual ceiling is dropped with steel trusses about 18 inches below the slab above .so my question is are fire rated recessed required ??by the way all exterior walls and floors are also concrete

Was it steel trusses or just metal framing? If it is a steel trussed fire ceiling, it would be double 1/2 or 5/8 drywall and would be a local code thing or just a job spec requirement. Check with the AHJ.

generally if the dropped portion of the ceiling is fire rated, then your fixture needs the same rating or it needs a fire box. in your case it is possible that the concrete floor is the fire rated barrier. There are other variables, not the least of which is fire suppression. You should look at the plans or consult the ahj if you are not sure.
