I have a customer that is putting in a 1 hr fire rated drop ceiling and wants recessed and troffers installed. There is no problem with the recess but the sales man is telling me the manufactuer can put a sticker on that sates the troffer is fire rated just no hour rating. They are saying that is up to the ceiling construction. Have you heard of this? Thanks for your time.

The rating of the fixture doesn't matter, the 1 hr ceiling would have to be built around the fixture and then you have to fire caulk your conduit penetrations into that light pocket.

I was told of fire boxes to encase fixture completely. I heard of it havent experience it. No fixture is fire rated one hour I believe.

You are not going to find a 2 x 4 fixture that's one hour rated, remember no opening larger than 16 sq inches is allowed and no more than 100 sq inches of openings in 100 sq feet. That said I did see a rated fire extinguisher cabinet the other day that was installed in a corridor wall.

They do make a rated cover for a 2 x 4 and also for can lights.

There are recessed cans with a 1 hour fire rating ... I don't have the time at the moment to go looking for it again, though.

I don't believe there are 2x4's with a fire rating.

The do make boxes / bells to cover recessed can fixtures to provide for a fire rating, but you would have to construct something for the 2x4 ... but how do you do that to coincide with a drop ceiling?

I have also never heard of a fire rated "drop ceiling" ... but that's just me.

Good Luck!
