Can I buy fire rated 2x4 foot fire rated troffers? The ceiling panels have to be fire rated according to the inspector. What about the lights ? It is a store with an apartment above. Thank you. My supplier said his don't actually say fire rated on them.

You need to find out the UL number of the ceiling assembly and follow the specific instructions. See http://productspec.ul.com/document.php?id=BXUV.D216 for an example.

Well since no opening is allowed to be larger that 16 square inches, I would say that a 2x4 is probably not going to work.

Looks like those covers that Jumper posted will work.

that's pretty cool. i've never even heard of these, let alone seen them.
$90 seems a bit high until you consider the alternative, in terms of labor.

what comes to mind is hard lids in hallways in hospitals. jacking fixtures
into a sheetrock boxed opening is usually pretty fugly. half the time, you
can't get it into the opening without ripping one piece of drywall off the
end of the boxed opening, destroying the fire rating....

not that i've ever seen that done, of course.

Usually the ceiling guy will box around them with ceiling tiles. Just make sure they are working first so you don't have to mess with them after he is done.
