fire sprinklers in electric room

i personaly have never seen it but was asked if it
was to code and couldnt find anything in the 2002 nec "nyc"
not my job but curious to find out..

You will find the portion directly related to electrical, in the NYC electric code section 110.26, and in the NYC fire code (I don't recall the section).
As a side note, most international fire codes require sprinklers in electric rooms unless specific permission is given by the AHJ. I don't know of many AJH's that give the exemption in order to cover their rears (as I would do as well if I were the AHJ).
