Fire stopping

We are installing new communications wiring in duplex units that are 100 years old and do not have any fire rated assemblies in them. The cabling is going from the basement/crawlspace through the second floor into the attic. Is it required by code that the chase that the wires and conduit are being run in be fire stopped at the first floor, first floor ceiling and attic ceiling?

This would really be a building code issue. If it were new construction it definitely would have to be fire stopped. In my area if the wall was open for installing the wires the building inspector would require it.

Firestopping would only be required between the units if separated by a fire rated wall.

What you will be required to do is maintain fireblocking and draftstopping where passing through the floor and where passing into the attic space. (concealled space areas as well)

See 602.8 of the IRC and Chapter 7 IBC as they apply...

Duplexs are not required to have a 1hr seperation so you would not need any fire stopping.

Fire stopping

Check with building official for jurisdiction and you may be able to sleeve the wires thru conduit and seal both ends. Also check what the rating is 1 hour 2 hour or 3 hour. Check with Hilti or Metacaulk for specific material.

That may be true but these buidings were built under the 1906 buiding code.:grin:

Also CA did not adopt the Residential building Code. That is a good reason to check with the AHJ.
