Given a 6" sch 40 conduit penetrating a 2 hour firewall, can the annular space around the conduit be sealed with caulking compound or will it require more than caulk to fill the annular space as the pipe melts away? It appears that a larger steel ring has been placed as a sleeve through the wall and the conduit placed through the sttel sleeve. I agree the sleeve is adequately firestop and my questions is the conduit running through it

Re: Firestopping

There's more to this than can be answered here without more information.

Each manufacturer i.e. 3M, Tremco, Hilti, etc... will have listed assemblies and can supply this information and details. All of these assemblies are also in the UL orange books.

Re: Firestopping

Smenser, here is the problem with this collar, if you click on the "product data sheet" you will see there are only two UL wall assemblies for this product and only one (W-L-2074) of which would apply to 6" PVC. Neither of these assemblies incorporate a steel sleeve as part of the assembly as shown in the UL orange book.

Re: Firestopping

Because I do not have the manufacturers information on this installation that was completed two year ago without inspection, I am limited on the product information. I have requested information from the company as to the product and the installer. My main concern is this is a Paint Mixing Room and the potential could be high of an incident. Trying to cover my A** and verify firestopping provisions.

Re: Firestopping

The annular space around an item penetrating a two hour wall will be dictated by the firestopping material. Most manufacturers now have products that are acceptable from point contact to several insches. The most common annular space requirements are 1/4 inch. If you have to insure the firestopping is adequate, the only suggestion I can give is to have the old caulk replaced with a product listed for the conditions. This should include a spec sheet on the product and a U.L. listed penetration assembly that applies to your scenario.
