Received a call from a women who's house is closing in a week. Inspector will allow an additional wireless smoke alarm in the basement.

First and second floor are hardwired..

Never heard of wireless smoke alarms, thought wireless system, panel, etc... ?? A google search shows wireless smoke alarms.. supply house gives me a regular hard wired, a master and a wireless..

I go to the women house and, pull down a smoke and ???? 3 or 4 - 2 wire fixture tinsel type wire going where ??.... both "hard wired" smokes are this way. , i looked but have no idea ??? So there's no hard wired smokes...

I told the women I would see what I can do short of hardwiring, cutting and patching, and maybe instead of 3, turn into 4 beds also (7 total)....

I'm going to call the inspector (I think the fire) and see what he will accept.

Has anyone installed wireless smoke alarms ?..

I'm thinking if allowed by the inspector and if the kidde firex is capable, to install a 120v master smoke alarm at the electrical panel and 3 wireless smoke alarms, one at each floor.

Any thoughts?? Appreciated..

What is a 2 wire tinsel type?

ha ha ha it just jumped in my head.........

googled..

Tinsel wire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tinsel wire is a type of electrical wire used for applications that require high mechanical flexibility but low current-carrying capacity.[1] Tinsel wire is commonly used in cords of telephones, handsets, headphones, and small electrical appliances. It is far more resistant to metal fatigue failure than either stranded wire or solid wire.

Ok tinsel wire.
So are you saying the existing hardwired smokes are part of a security system.

Try this. It may take a little to load, may need to try a couple of times. It's from Kidde; one wired and then set up multiple wireless.

The existing "tinsel wire" :- ) smokes. ??? I looked for some type of security or fire panel and couldnt locate one.

Called kidde. Up to twelve devices.
Called fire inspector. He will allow wireless with one hard wired master.

Called home owner ..... No response ?

It used to be the practice, and ADT was notorious for this, that if you had a home alarm system and ended the contract, the provider would come out and pull the panel. Those monitoring contracts were written so that you only leased the equipment, you didn't buy it. Technically illegal here, since in NJ you cannot reduce the level of fire protection, even if it's not required by code, once it is installed, without written permission from the AHJ.

OK thank you...

I will probably be installing them for this woman.

I frequent two supply houses in my area. One carries firex, the other brk.

I'd like to get in and out with this install and not be playing around programming them.

The BRK, from what I see of it you, you push the battery compartment in on the master (either the 120v or battery if there are no 120v units) for the slaves you hold the button in while pushing the battery compartment in. then it talks to you.. then you set location of device, then you go to master and test ????

The Firex, set dip switches install battery and or 120v.

Has anyone installed one or the other or both..?

Thank you

I've done the one that is Wink compatible, but wireless only. It was easy to set up. You pick a random dipswitch pattern, set them all the same and then put the batteries in. Easy peasy.
