So the fire marshal sited the church for not having emergency lights and exit signs. So after the emer. lights & signs are up and running. I call the fire marshal, he comes out and inspects the work and signs it off? So the church doesn't need to get a permit, and have a building inspector inspect it too? Thank you for your help.

If you are making alteration you need an inspection on them. considering it is a church and it fail an inspection you might not need new permit. all you have to do is call the AHJ and ask.

Hmmm...I am suprised that the church did not have em lites ect...in the 1st place as I would think places of assembly would come into play and simple safety and egress necessary.

I have not been involved in a church project before, and am also suprised that permit and inspection weren't required.

I fortunately/unfortunately tend do go above and beyond in my work and would have pulled a permit anyway unless the AHJ stated otherwise while I was there.

I'm wondering when i call the fire marshal and he shows up, is he going to ask if the work was permitted and inspected by the building inspector? Or is he going to show up, inspect it, pass it and that's it.

The fire marshall may also be the inspector if you are from a small town. Also, not knowing when the church was built, it may have been exempt from inspection in the past but now must meet all NFPA codes and acessibility codes. You maybe opening up a can of worms.

The Fire Marshal's inspection is not the same as an electrical inspection. If you are running new circuits for the exit and emergency lights you probably will need to get an electrical permit and have both a rough and final inspection and then call the Fire Marshal to sign off on a safety inspection. Call your local AHJ and check but this is normally how things work.

If there are other violations other than lights they would need to get a GC and a building permit.
