How many of you go exclusively with octagon boxes in residential custom homes. Seems lately fixtures show up with a backplate that won’t cover a fiberglass round nail on or barhanger. I will use a octagon or 4 sq with round plaster ring if dealing with tech fixtures, but typically use fiberglass for the rest of the fixture openings ( except fan )

I'm NYC I use standard metal bar boxes with octagon box for center points, if I know that there's a fan or chandelier going in I'll put in an upgraded box

I usually use the cheaper Carlon blue boxes, and haven't had any problem with canopy coverage on round boxes, unless the drywall work was sloppy. The old-work round box is a different story, due to the flange.

Carlon also has a smaller nail-on round box, and I like those for smoke detectors. The size difference makes it easier to tell where the smokes go at trim-out time, too, where it can be uncertain, like in hallways.
