Hey

I have some questions regarding specific fixture requirements inside of commercial hood. My client wants an LED strip light installed but I can’t find anything in the code stating LEDs can be used unless it’s vapor proof...

Also when being in a hood, what would the requirement for a raceway be. Emt, RMC or even sealtight.

Thank you.

I would recommend high-brightness LED bulbs in standard vapor-tight lights.

I normally use EMT and compression fittings inside hoods, but rarely need to.

I don't even think vapor proof will comply (or last very long) with its plastic. This is what I always see but without the wire guard so it's NSF approved. Of course you can use any number of fixtures and any LED bulb to give you the light you need.

They apparently do make recessed LED lighting but it's going to be something that is ordered with the hood.

EMT and compression fitting here too. Remember that the inside of the hood is going to be pressure washed with hot water and nasty chemicals.

Hey Hal,

thanks for the reply.

the fixture you linked is exactly wat I was referring.

as much as I’d like to install a strip light, the jelly style with cage is the way I was leaning, just wanted another Opinion regarding the code on non “protected” lighting fixtures.

Get the glass jelly jar with an LED. The plastic vapor strip will not last.

As for wiring, I’d come through the top of the hood straight into the fixture with MC or greenfield; that’s how they come from the factory.

The new captiveair hoods are coming with recessed LED’s but I would want to be cutting those into stainless in an existing hood. It’s going to make a mess trying to keep the hole saw oiled up.

I distinctly remember to lights for use in a hood are very specific use, they are sealed to the sheet metal at the top, all the electrical connections are outside the hood. I would not want the liability of putting something not listed in a hood. Put LED bulbs in the hood lights, make sure they run thru the shunt trip circuit.

The one's I usually see have octagon boxes above the hood, with EMT or FMC between them.
