i have a fluorescent light with a cord and plug attached to it. can you cut off plug and hard wire fixture using the same cord attached? or is that a code violation? do you have to use specific cord?

I would say not listed for that.
However who is going to know if you install just like any other pendant type mount.

There may well be exceptions but all the Fluorescent fixtures I have inspected that have a factory cord allowing compliance with 410.62(C) employ a cord that can be distinguished from a Type SJO or similar cord in that they have a more durable insulation.

Yes cutting the cord cap off is a violation, but I may know someone who cut the cord cap off & never lost a wink of sleep.

what exactly does SJO stand for?

S = service cord
J = Junior < 300V (not sure if it really means junior but I know it definitely means <300V)
O = oil resistant

if it has OO that means oil resistant inside & out or double oil resistant
and a W means wet location
