Hung a halogen motion light over at a buddies a while ago. The light was "used" and during the process of hanging it I broke the glass lens, The light was rather pricy so we had our glass buddy cut a piece to replace it. 2 weeks later he told me it shatered while in place while the light was on. My guess is the factory glass is resisant to heat where the piece we cut was not. Any thoughts on what happened? I guess I learned my lesson about tampering with UL listed equipment.

Re: Fixture glass replacement.

Joe many lens for halogen fixtures are either Pyrex or tempered high temp glass. halogen lamps operate at a very high temperature compared to regular incandescent lamps. A very good case in point is the recall of older touchier floor lamps by UL and CPSC. These floor fixtures caused many house fires because of the glass protecting the bulb would shatter when left on for long periods. and the pieces of this very hot glass would ignite anything flammable they landed on. These lamps are now manufactured with a metal guard to prevent this from happening.
