When you have a fixture that has a sticker on it that says " Incandescent Luminaire" or one that says "HID Fixture" can you retrofit the fixture with a compact fluorescent lamp? I had someone come to my work and sold my boss on a new item that they have and they wanted us to try it out. We had a 400W HPS high bay fixture, and the installed these 100 compact flourescent lamps with a medium base. They had purchased an adapter to go from a Mogul base to a medium base, and then an adapter to go from one lamp to two lamps. They bypassed the ballast, starter and capacitor and wired the line voltage straight through to the socket. Now the voltage was 277V and both adapters were rated at 600W but 250V. To me there is something wrong with this install. Not only did they use the adapters that weren't rated for the voltage present, but the fixtures were listed for HID lamps. Needless to say the lamps didn't even last 96 hours. I would like to hear what you people think.

I think that I'm thinking the same as you. The 250 volt socket reducer and lamp duplexer are a no-brainer. No good for 277. Sounds like the lamps they sold him were junk too, huh?
